Fair Trade Policies
The Bombay Bedspread Company is a registered importer & member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops - BAFTS.

FAIR TRADE & SOCIAL POLICY
We source our products from positive suppliers; NGOs, cooperatives, small family run businesses or individual artisans. These groups and individuals have an immediate and positive impact on the local social and economic community as a whole.

NGOs: Non Governmental Organisations whose aims are to encourage:

The empowerment of women in the community by developing their crafts and business skills to become respected integral members of the local community and critical to the local economy. This results in women becoming empowered and respected within the wider tribal community itself.

The promotion of traditional crafts particularly for artisans in tribal villages and remote states. To bring their products to the global market place so that traditional crafts can be safeguarded and lead to a sustainable source of income.

The stimulation of the local economy by encouraging crafts in remote rural tribal areas which negate the need for skilled artisans to become daily manual labourers or face forced economic migration to the cities to look for work and to face the inevitability of slum dwelling.

Co-operatives
We work with cooperatives who are owned by the community and which have a positive impact on their members both economically and socially.

Small Family Run Businesses
We source directly from a few small family run businesses. By placing orders with them we also help other related small businesses in the community as various aspects of production are outsourced to them. We pay premium prices and on better terms than the large export houses or the middlemen they normally look to for business.

We work closely with producers in a clear and transparent fashion. We have built and continue to build close relationships with them and are committed to ongoing and reliable future business partnerships with them.

We submit payment for orders in a transparent fashion with agreed amounts paid in advance.

We will endeavour to be of assistance to artisans in their quest to produce quality goods suitable for the western market. We offer input on product development and styles whilst staying true to traditional patterns and designs thereby maximising their economic potential.

We respect seasonal working patterns such as harvest time and tailor our production schedules accordingly.

We encourage and promote positive business, social and environmental developments within the communities with whom we do business.

We are against child labour.

We are against discriminations of any kind including those based on gender, race, religion, caste, or disability.

We promote fair trade through dissemination of information, press releases and education.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Our environmental policy is one of positive influence.

• Promote sound environmental procedures during production
• Encourage positive environmental policy and raise awareness of environmental issues among suppliers and customers
• Promote the use of natural dyes
• Minimise product waste
• Minimise use of plastics in packaging and minimise amount of packaging in general
• Use recycled and re-usable packaging wherever possible
• Use of eco friendly stationery such as recycled paper for office use and marketing print

Conservation and animal welfare

• Only stock cruelty free silk
• Support UK based Asian elephant charity to donate towards elephant conservation through sales of elephant motif products, particularly in Jaipur from where we source many of our cotton bedspreads.
